Diet quality in early and mid-childhood in relation to trajectories of growth and body composition

Clinical Nutrition Apr 02, 2019

Nguyen AN, et al. - In this investigation, researchers studied the associations of overall diet quality in early as well as mid-childhood with growth and body composition trajectories up to age 10. Participants in the study were 3,991 children from the Generation R Study, a population-based, prospective cohort in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Findings suggested an association of better diet quality in both early and mid-childhood with higher height, weight, and fat-free mass index (FFMI), but not fat mass index (FMI) or body fat percentage (BF%) up to 10 years. At an earlier or later point in time, this was independent of diet quality. Overall, the investigators concluded that dietary intake might have a beneficial effect on growth and body composition in childhood according to dietary guidelines.
