Diet quality and fruit, vegetable, and sugar-sweetened beverage consumption by household food insecurity among 8- to 12-year-old children during summer months
Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics May 07, 2019
Lee J, et al. - In this secondary analysis of cross-sectional data, researchers evaluated school-aged children’s summer month weekday and weekend day diet quality and eating patterns according to household food insecurity. For every 1,000 kcal consumed on a weekend day, less energy intake, fewer cups of whole fruit, and more sugar-sweetened beverage intake was reported by children from food-insecure households vs their counterparts from food-secure households. For weekday eating patterns, they did not find similar results. As children tend to gain weight during summer months, weight gain prevention and healthy development, particularly in children from food-insecure households, could be promoted by increasing weekend access to whole fruits and encourage water intake.
