Dialysis mode and associated outcomes in patients with end‐stage renal disease and atrial fibrillation: A 14‐year nationwide cohort study
Journal of the American Heart Association Jun 07, 2021
Chang CH, Fan PC, Lin YS, et al. - Researchers herein assessed the dialysis mode and related outcomes in patients suffering from end‐stage renal disease (ESRD) and atrial fibrillation (AF). They used the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database to identify patients receiving dialysis. Participants were segregated into peritoneal dialysis (PD) or hemodialysis. Ischemic stroke/systemic embolism, major bleeding, and intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) were set as primary outcomes. Findings showed different impacts of dialytic modalities by PD or hemodialysis in these patients with ESRD and AF. At 5‐year follow‐up, patients receiving PD were found to have overall reduced ischemic stroke/systemic embolism, major bleeding, and ICH, relative to patients undergoing hemodialysis.
