Dialysis–dependence predicts complications, ICU care, length of stay, and skilled nursing needs in elective primary total knee and hip arthroplasty
Journal of Arthroplasty Feb 23, 2018
Patterson JT, et al. - In this cohort analysis, researchers assessed the risks and perioperative resource needs of total joint arthroplasty (TJA) in dialysis-dependent patients. For 30-day adverse events, ICU care, longer admission, and rehabilitation requirements in total joint arthroplasty, it was noted that dialysis-dependence was an independent risk factor. Thirty days were not enough for the detection of infectious complications in these subjects. These findings inform shared decision making, perioperative resource planning, and risk adjustment under alternative reimbursement models.
