Diagnostic yield of 2 strategies for adult celiac disease identification in primary care
Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology Dec 21, 2018
Scoglio R, et al. - Researchers compared the diagnostic yield and cost consequences of 2 strategies for the detection of celiac disease (CD) in primary care, regardless of symptoms vs case finding (CF), using a point-of-care test (POCT), to bridge the diagnostic gap of CD in adults. POCT for anti-transglutaminase immunoglobulin A antibodies was offered to all subjects under the age of 75 who went to their general practitioners' offices consecutively. The total cost and mean cost of each new CD case for the POCT screening strategy was €7497.35 and €1499.47 and €9855.14 and €1971.03 respectively for the CF strategy. Overall, testing symptomatic subjects in CF only by POCT seems to be the most cost-effective strategy to bridge the diagnostic gap in primary care for adults.
