Journal of the Peripheral Nervous System Sep 21, 2019
Hanewinckel R, van Oijen M, Taams NE, et al. - In this study including polyneuropathy patients (n = 117) and controls (n = 188)(headache, transient ischemic attack, multiple sclerosis), researchers assessed the diagnostic utility of symptoms of chronic polyneuropathy. They also developed and sought validation for a simple questionnaire that can aid diagnose chronic polyneuropathy, using multi-variable logistic regression. They constructed a simple scoring system (Erasmus Polyneuropathy Symptom Score, E-PSS). Polyneuropathy patients most often reported numb and tingling feet, which displayed the highest sensitivity. The highest specificity was displayed by walking on cotton wool and allodynia. E-PSS was developed, ranging from 0 to 14. A good performance (AUC = 0.92) of E-PSS was evident in the derivation set. E-PSS received validation in the external population (AUC = 0.95). Overall, E-PSS was viewed as a simple, validated six-item score that may aid screening for chronic polyneuropathy. This score considered the presence and frequency of 6 different symptoms.
