Diagnostic value of lung ultrasonography in children with COVID‐19
Pediatric Pulmonology Apr 14, 2021
Hizal M, Aykac K, Yayla BCC, et al. - Researchers undertook this prospective multicenter study to investigate the diagnostic worth of lung ultrasound (LUS) in the assessment of children suffering from novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19). Participants were 40 children with proven COVID‐19. A diagnosis of pulmonary involvement was confirmed by LUS in 10 of 12 patients who had positive computed tomography (CT) findings. In 15 of 16 patients with normal CT features, normal lung patterns were revealed on LUS. Chest X‐ray showed false‐negative results for lung involvement in 75% whereas it was 16.7% for LUS. Based on the findings of this study, experts suggest the likely usefulness of LUS as a tool in the diagnostic steps of children suffering from COVID‐19. There may be a likely decrease in chest CT evaluations when LUS is employed in the initial diagnostic steps for these children.
