Diagnostic value of cardiopulmonary ultrasound in elderly patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome
BMC Pulmonary Medicine Aug 18, 2018
Huang D, et al. - In this study involving consecutive patients admitted to ICU with the diagnosis of suspected acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) based on clinical grounds, researchers assessed the diagnostic value of cardiopulmonary ultrasound in elderly patients with ARDS. In diagnosis of pulmonary lesions, results of lung ultrasound (LUS) examination were found to be consistent with the CT scan results. They observed a greater diagnostic accuracy was shown by cardiopulmonary ultrasound vs LUS alone in elderly patients with ARDS. An increased specificity of the diagnosis of ARDS in elderly patients was provided by combined performances of cardiopulmonary ultrasound, N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide, and PaO2/FiO2.
