Diagnostic value of axillary artery ultrasound in patients with suspected giant cell arteritis

Rheumatology Apr 08, 2020

Hop H, Mulder DJ, Sandovici M, et al. - Colour duplex ultrasonography (CDU) findings with axillary18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) PET/CT findings were compared and the diagnostic performance of temporal and axillary artery CDU with temporal artery CDU alone were also compared. Researchers retrospectively enrolled suspected individuals of giant cell arteritis. FDG-PET/CT-measured axillary artery involvement and was characterized as axillary artery FDG uptake higher than liver uptake. There were a total of 113 individuals who included in this study. This study found consistent presence of an axillary halo or occlusion on CDU with axillary artery FDG-PET/CT results, but a negative CDU does not rule out axillary involvement. it is consider that adding axillary artery measurement to temporal artery measurement may substantially raise the diagnostic performance of CDU.
