Diagnostic performance of MRI and histology in assessment of deep lipomatous tumours
British Journal of Surgery Sep 15, 2019
Cairncross L, Snow HA, Strauss DC, et al. - A series of deep lipomatous tumors was reported to compare atypical lipomatous tumors (ALTs) with lipomas in terms of the clinical, radiological and pathological features. In addition, researchers sought to predict the likelihood of a lipomatous tumor being ALT based on anatomical site and MRI characteristics. Among 248 patients with deep lipomatous tumors presenting over 6 years to a tertiary sarcoma center, ALT was finally diagnosed in 81 (32·7%) indicating that most deep lipomatous tumors (nearly 70%) are benign lipomas. ALT was almost never diagnosed in correlation with certain features such as smaller than 5 cm or located outside the lower limb with no suspicious characteristics on MRI. Safe and confident management of tumors with these features could be undertaken outside tertiary sarcoma centers.
