Diagnostic performance of emergency physician-performed point-of-care ultrasonography for acute appendicitis: A meta-analysis
The American Journal of Emergency Medicine Jul 19, 2018
Lee SH, et al. - The sensitivity and specificity of emergency physician-performed point-of-care ultrasonography (EP-POCUS) for diagnosing acute appendicitis (AA) were assessed. Researchers performed a search of the PubMed and EMBASE databases and evaluated the diagnostic performance of EP-POCUS using bivariate modeling and hierarchical summary receiver operating characteristic curves. Findings revealed excellent diagnostic performances of EP-POCUS and radiologist-performed ultrasonography (RADUS) for AA, with EP-POCUS having even better performance for pediatric AA. When the attending EP is the initial POCUS operator and uses a 7-mm cut-off value, accurate diagnoses could be achieved.
