Diagnostic and treatment trends in children with Kawasaki disease in the United States, 2006–2015
The Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal Oct 01, 2019
Dominguez SR, Birkholz M, Anderson MS, et al. - The Pediatric Hospital Information System database of patients admitted with Kawasaki disease (KD) between January 1, 2006, and December 31, 2015, was used to assess differences in treatment practice and compliance with national guidelines for the diagnostic assessment of children with KD. A total of 12,089 children with KD were diagnosed during the study period. KD continued to be a difficult diagnosis. In the assessment of children with potential KD, possibilities were there for earlier use of echocardiograms. Important differences in practice existed surrounding second-line therapy. This data imply the supremacy of second-line therapy use of infliximab or steroids over intravenous immunoglobulin in terms of decreasing the requirement for supplementary therapies. However, prospective, controlled studies are required to validate this conclusion.
