Diagnostic accuracy of prehospital electrocardiograms interpreted remotely by emergency physicians in myocardial infarction patients

The American Journal of Emergency Medicine Sep 11, 2018

Tanguay A, et al. - As prehospital 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) is the most widely used screening tool for recognition of ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), researchers evaluated whether emergency department (ED) physicians can accurately interpret prehospital 12-lead ECGs from a remote location. All suspected prehospital STEMI patients who were transported by EMS and underwent angiography between 2006 and 2014 were included in the study, and 625 suspected STEMI cases were analyzed. Results supported the diagnostic utility of remote interpretation of prehospital 12-lead ECGs by ED physicians in this EMS system. Although the rate of ECG misinterpretation is low, ED physicians operating from a remote location still have room to improve their ability to accurately diagnose STEMI patients.
