Diagnostic accuracy of depression questionnaires in adult patients with diabetes: A systematic review and meta-analysis
PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases Jun 25, 2019
de Joode JW, et al. - In adults with type 1 or 2 diabetes, researchers assessed the diagnostic accuracy of depression questionnaires. In total, 6,097 peer-reviewed articles were screened. For this systematic review and meta-analysis, 21 studies (N=5,703 patients) met inclusion criteria. According to findings, the Centre for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (≥ 16) had the highest sensitivity, whereas the Patient Health Questionnaire 9-item version (PHQ-9; ≥ 10) displayed the highest specificity, but there were wide and overlapping confidence intervals. In all, the algorithm for the PHQ-9 had a sensitivity of 60.9% and a specificity of 64.0%. The investigators concluded that additional high-quality studies are warranted to confirm the diagnostic accuracy of these depression questionnaires in patients with diabetes, in light of the variance in results and suboptimal reporting of the studies assessed.
