Diagnostic accuracy of combined WBC, ANC and CRP in adult emergency department patients suspected of acute appendicitis
The American Journal of Emergency Medicine May 04, 2020
Huckins DS, et al. - Researchers aimed at ascertaining the sensitivity, specificity, and negative predictive value (NPV) of normal total white blood cell count (WBC) and normal absolute neutrophil count (ANC) combined with a normal proprietary C-reactive protein (pCRP) level in adult emergency department cases with abdominal pain suspected of possible acute appendicitis. From seven US emergency departments, 422 suspected cases of acute appendicitis were enrolled. Among these, acute appendicitis was prevalent in 19.1%. For acute appendicitis, they identified high sensitivity and negative predictive value of the combination of normal WBC and ANC with normal CRP levels in this prospective adult patient cohort.
