Diagnosis of complicated FEVR preoperatively and intra−/post-operatively: Characteristics and risk factors for diagnostic timing
BMC Ophthalmology Jun 14, 2019
Xia F, et al. - In this retrospective study, researchers described the features of complicated familial exudative vitreoretinopathy (FEVR), an inheritable vitreoretinal disease triggered by anomalous and incomplete retinal angiogenesis, patients diagnosed before surgery or intra−/post-operatively and analyzed the risk factors for the diagnostic timing. The study sample consisted of 48 patients who had surgery and were diagnosed as FEVR. According to the findings, FEVR's phenotypes were highly variable and can imitate many non-specific vitreoretinal disorders. Unilateral retinal detachment (RD), bilateral RD, unilateral persistent fetal vasculature (PFV), bilateral PFV were the most non-specific referral diagnosis/pre-operative diagnosis. Only a positive family history or a simple ocular presentation with RD could contribute to the preoperative diagnosis of FEVR.
