Diagnosis of axillary web syndrome in patients after breast cancer surgery: Epidemiology, risk factors, and clinical aspects a prospective study
American Journal of Clinical Oncology Sep 29, 2018
Figueira PVG, et al. - Authors characterized a tool to diagnose axillary web syndrome (AWS), a complication after breast cancer surgery linked to the axillary approach, and assess its cord frequency, traits, and risk factors. Participants were a prospective cohort of 173 women followed-up at Breast Diseases Division of Universidade Federal de São Paulo between July 2014 and September 2015. A high incidence of AWS was seen using the evaluation protocol applied here, with palpable cords more common than visible ones. Seemingly the evaluation protocol developed in this study has great value for early detection of AWS. Findings suggested an association of lymphadenectomy, as well as hypertension, with an increased risk of cord development. They noted the association of diabetes with a decreased risk.
