Diagnosis experiences of adolescents with polycystic ovary syndrome: Cross-sectional study
Clinical Endocrinology Oct 02, 2021
Peña AS, Teede H, Hewawasam E, et al. - According to this cross-sectional study, the majority of adolescent girls with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) are diagnosed on time, yet a minority of adolescents are still misdiagnosed. Current diagnostic information does not match the needs of adolescents and represents a missed opportunity for preventative healthcare during a critical transition to adult care.
A medical practitioner detected PCOS in 86 adolescents (aged 13–19 years).
The majority of the adolescents (n = 67, 78% ) were diagnosed with PCOS within 1 year of their first doctor's visit, however, 11 (13% ) were diagnosed more than 2 years later.
Before the diagnosis, 53 adolescents (66%) saw 1–2 health professionals.
Although 49 adolescents (57%) were satisfied with the overall diagnosis experience, adolescents were either dissatisfied or reported that information about lifestyle management (n = 47, 55%), long-term complications (n = 53, 62%), and emotional support and counselling (n = 65, 76%) was not mentioned after diagnosis.
