Diagnosing persistent blood eosinophilia in asthma with single blood eosinophil or exhaled nitric oxide level
Respiratory Medicine Jul 07, 2018
Coumou H, et al. - Researchers studied in patients with new-onset asthma whether persistent blood eosinophilia can be predicted with one single measurement of blood eosinophils or exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) biomarkers. In 114 adults with new-onset asthma on inhaled corticosteroid treatment, blood eosinophils and exhaled nitric oxide levels were measured at yearly intervals over 5 years. The study findings suggested that one single blood eosinophil count predicts persistent eosinophilia in adult asthma. In addition, "Non-eosinophilic asthma" could be diagnosed by one single blood eosinophil count. It was observed that FeNO was not effective in predicting persistent eosinophilia in new-onset asthma.
