Diabetic neuropathy differs between type 1 and type 2 diabetes: Insights from magnetic resonance neurography
Annals of Neurology Feb 20, 2018
Jende JME, et al. - This research was initiated in order to visualize and quantify variations of microstructural nerve damage in distal symmetric diabetic neuropathy (DPN) between type 1 diabetes (T1D) and type 2 diabetes (T2D). Additionally, authors sought to identify the connections between neuropathic symptoms and serological risk factors. Variation was reported in the predominant type of nerve lesions in DPN between T1D and T2D. The lesion type exhibited an association with serological parameters. This data suggested that predominant nerve lesions in T1D correlated with poor glycemic control and loss of nerve conduction. On the other hand, predominant lesions in T2D were related to changes in lipid metabolism.
