Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice Jun 07, 2021
Gomes MB, Calliari LE, Conte D, et al. - In this nationwide study, researchers sought to examine the prevalence of diabetes-related chronic complications (DRCCs) and the factors that contribute to them in Brazilian adolescents with type 1 diabetes (T1D). This investigation was carried out in 14 public clinics in 10 cities, with 1,760 patients, 367 adolescents, with 328 eligible for this study. There were 184 females (50.1%) among the eligible patients, with an age range of 13-19 years, HbA1c of 9.6 % ± 2.4, an age of 8.9 ± 4.3 years at diagnosis, and diabetes duration of 8.1 ± 4.3 years. A high percentage of patients had some form of DRCC, which was linked to diabetes duration, glycemic control, diastolic blood pressure, and diet adherence. To avoid DRCCs in this young population, educational programs should begin with the diagnosis.
