Diabetes mellitus in children with acute recurrent and chronic pancreatitis: Data from the INternational Study Group of Pediatric Pancreatitis: In search for a cure cohort
Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology Nov 01, 2019
Bellin MD, Lowe M, Zimmerman MB, et al. - Children with acute recurrent pancreatitis (ARP) or chronic pancreatitis (CP), with and without diabetes mellitus (DM), in the INternational Study Group of Pediatric Pancreatitis: In Search for a CuRE (INSPPIRE) registry were compared with respect to demographic and clinical features. From the INSPPIRE database, 397 children were assessed for the presence or absence of physician-diagnosed DM. A diagnosis of DM was made in 24 children (6% of the cohort). Beta-cell autoantibodies were present in five of 13 tested children. Children with DM exhibited pancreatic atrophy more frequently, inferring more advanced exocrine disease. However, data suggested that children with DM display increased autoimmunity and hypertriglyceridemia, inferring a possible mediatory role of risk factors for type 1 and type 2 DM, respectively, in DM development in children with pancreatitis.
