Diabetes mellitus and age are risk factors of interval colon cancer: A case-control study
Digestive Diseases Apr 10, 2019
Laish I, et al. - Because interval colorectal cancer (CRC) is largely associated with poor endoscopic performance or different biology in polyp development, researchers assessed tumor and patient characteristics as predictors of interval cancer in an Israeli population. Study participants included patients with colon cancer who received their diagnoses in the researchers’ institution and had two colonoscopies. They compared demographic parameters and tumor characteristics between 84 patients with interval cancer, occurring 1–10 years after a negative colonoscopy, and 983 subjects with primary CRC. Furthermore, patient-related characteristics, including diabetes and diverticulosis, were compared after negative colonoscopy between 51 patients with interval cancer and 255 cancer-free controls and previous negative colonoscopy. In this retrospective study, there were no significant differences between patients with interval cancer occurring < 3 years and after 3–10 years. Patients with interval cancer tended to be older and suffer from diabetes. For pre-malignant lesions, these groups of patients should be more carefully or more frequently screened.
