Diabetes is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease in patients with familial hypercholesterolemia
Journal of Clinical Lipidology Sep 21, 2018
Paquette M, et al. - Researchers determined the prevalence of diabetes and examined the link between diabetes and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk in a large cohort of 1,412 Canadian patients with familial hypercholesterolemia (FH), a monogenic disease associated with lifelong elevation in circulating low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and premature CVD. According to findings, diabetic FH patients vs non-diabetic patients had a higher prevalence of CVD (45% vs 22%, respectively). On adjusting for the Montreal-FH-SCORE, however, diabetes was found not to be a significant predictor of CVD. Overall, a high CVD risk was observed in diabetic FH patients, which may be largely attributable to the presence of many concomitant cardiometabolic risk factors in these patients.
