Diabetes in relation to Barrett esophagus and adenocarcinomas of the esophagus: A pooled study from the International Barrett's and Esophageal Adenocarcinoma Consortium
Cancer Sep 14, 2019
Petrick JL, Li N, Anderson LA, et al. - Researchers assessed the link between diabetes and esophageal adenocarcinoma (EA), esophagogastric junction adenocarcinoma (EGJA), and Barrett esophagus (BE) via logistic regression in this investigation. They harmonized data across 13 studies in the International Barrett's and Esophageal Adenocarcinoma Consortium, including 2,309 EA cases, 1,938 EGJA cases, 1,728 BE cases, and 16,354 controls. They identified an association of diabetes with a 34% increased risk of EA, 27% for EGJA, and 30% for EA/EGJA combined. The diabetes-EA/EGJA link was altered by regurgitation symptoms; individuals with regurgitation showed a 63% heightened risk, which was not found in those without regurgitation. Of note, they did not observe a consistent link between diabetes and BE, suggesting a possible impact of diabetes on the progression of BE to cancer.
