Diabetes, depressive symptoms, and mortality risk in old age: The role of inflammation
Depression and Anxiety Oct 14, 2019
Castro-Costa E, Diniz BS, Firmo JOA, et al. - Researchers evaluated data from 1,183 community-dwelling older adults who were divided into four groups—“neither diabetes nor depression”, “diabetes only”, “depression only”, and “both diabetes and depression”—for mortality risk associated with the comorbidity between depression and diabetes. In addition, they evaluated how inflammation influences this mortality risk. Study participants were followed-up for a median of 13.5 years. The researchers noted a higher risk of death among participants with both diabetes and depression (HR: 2.33; 95% CI: 1.59–3.42) vs those with each condition alone (HR diabetes: 2.08, 95% CI: 1.56–2.76; HR depression: 1.26, 95% CI: 1.03–1.54). The risk of mortality among individuals with both diabetes and depression was significantly moderated in correlation with high levels of hs-CRP, which was indicative of high inflammatory status.
