Diabetes, depressive symptoms, and mortality risk in old age: The role of inflammation
Depression and Anxiety May 14, 2019
Castro-Costa E, et al. - In this study, researchers evaluated adults with comorbid depression and diabetes for mortality risk. In addition, they examined how inflammation influences mortality risk in this population. A total of 1,183 community-dwelling older adults were included in this study, and were divided into four groups, according to having: neither diabetes nor depression, diabetes only, depression only, and both diabetes and depression. Study participants were followed-up for a median of 13.5 years. Participants with both diabetes and depression were noted to be at the highest death risk in this population. This risk was significantly moderated in correlation to a high inflammatory status.
