Diabetes and elevated preoperative HbA1c level as risk factors for postoperative delirium after cardiac surgery: An observational cohort study
Neuropsychiatric Disease and Treatment Feb 28, 2019
Kotfis K, et al. - A group of 3,178 individuals were examined to analyze the relationship of postoperative delirium (POD) in cardiac surgery with diabetes or elevated preoperative glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) level. Researchers found no difference in subjects with insulin treatment. They observed diabetics and those on oral diabetic medications experienced delirium more often. They noted a relationship between the diagnosis of diabetes and a higher risk of developing POD. An association of POD with age, heart failure, preoperative creatinine, extracardiac arteriopathy, and preoperative HbA1c level was also noted in multivariate analysis, controlled for diabetes. Regardless of the diagnosis of diabetes, higher preoperative HbA1c level is a risk factor for postcardiac surgery delirium.
