Developmental delay and school performance among retinoblastoma survivors: Development/school morbidity among retinoblastoma survivors
American Journal of Ophthalmology May 13, 2021
Reynolds M, Lueder G, Gordon M, et al. - Researchers conducted this retrospective cohort study to describe the academic performance of childhood retinoblastoma (RB) survivors. Seventy-three retinoblastoma patients (median age at diagnosis 9.97 months [range 0.29, 65.1]) were followed for a median of 6.4 years (0.2, 1.76). Multivariable analysis showed that a history of receiving chemotherapy was related to self-reported school difficulties, and possessing an individualized education program (IEP). The degree of visual impairment and enucleation history had no effect on the risk of self-reported school difficulties or the implementation of an IEP. Chemotherapy treatment is associated with academic difficulties in childhood RB survivors, a risk factor independent of visual acuity.
