Development of a novel mandibular distraction osteogenesis simulator using Computer Aided Design and 3D printing
International Journal of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology Jan 15, 2021
Reighard CL, Powell AR, Zurawski TY, et al. - Researchers conducted the study for designing a novel, low-cost, high-fidelity neonatal mandibular distraction osteogenesis (MDO) simulator that can be used for trainee education and refinement of surgical technique. Using additive manufacturing techniques, a novel MDO simulator was developed. Computer-Aided Design and 3D printing enabled a realistic surgical simulator to be produced that emulates significant aspects of MDO surgery. Data reported that consumable material costs per model were $9.39 USD. The MDO model showed sufficient fidelity and holds promise for surgeons in training as a skill development tool. To evaluate its usefulness as a training and evaluation method, further studies are expected.
