Development curves of communication and social interaction in individuals with cerebral palsy
Developmental Medicine & Child Neurology Sep 27, 2019
Tan SS, van Gorp M, Voorman JM, et al. - In this Pediatric Rehabilitation Research in the Netherlands (PERRIN)-DECADE study, researchers determined development curves of communication and social interaction from childhood into adulthood for people with cerebral palsy (CP). For this investigation, they longitudinally evaluated 421 people with CP, aged from 1 to 20 years at baseline, after 13 years (n = 121 at follow-up). Using the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales, communication and social interactions were evaluated. Investigators found that CP people and without intellectual disability demonstrate developmental communication curves and social interactions comparable to typically developing people, irrespective of their level of motor function. Healthcare professionals may use development curves to set specific treatment goals for individuals who appear to be lagging behind expected development and adequate timing.
