Development and validation of a simple hip fracture risk prediction tool for type 2 diabetes: The Fremantle Diabetes Study Phase I
Diabetes Care Nov 23, 2018
Davis WA, et al. – Researchers developed and validated a simple hip fracture risk prediction tool for community-based patients with type 2 diabetes, and they compared its performance with the only published prediction equation to include type 2 diabetes as a risk factor, QFracture. Between entry (1993–1996) and end (2012), hip fracture hospitalizations in 1,251 study participants with type 2 diabetes aged 40–89 years from the longitudinal Fremantle Diabetes Study Phase I (FDS1) were determined. Older age, female sex, lower BMI, peripheral sensory neuropathy, and estimated glomerular filtration rate < 45 mL/min/1.73 m2 were independent predictors of fracture. QFracture did well in FDS1, but the availability of 25 variables was required. The FDS1 hip fracture risk equation is a simple validated addition to type 2 diabetes management, which uses variables readily available in routine care.
