Development and daily use of a numeric rating score to assess sleep quality in ICU patients
Journal of Critical Care Apr 15, 2019
Rood P, et al. - Researchers validated a single numeric rating score (NRS) for sleep assessment among patients in the intensive care unit (ICU). They evaluated sleep sufficiency, the NRS, and the Richards Campbell Sleep Questionnaire (RCSQ) in cooperative patients from 19 centers, in whom cross-sectional measurements were performed on two separate days. They compared the assessments using a Bland Altman plot. Using regression analysis, an NRS cut-off was defined. They implemented daily sleep assessment, which was monitored single center for a year. Overall, they concluded that, for the evaluation of sleep quality, a single NRS for sleep is interchangeable for the RCSQ score. They defined > 5 as the optimal cut-off. Patients in daily ICU practice viewed NRS for sleep as a practical means to assess and monitor sleep.
