Development and assessment of novel lung ultrasound interpretation criteria for the detection of interstitial lung disease in systemic sclerosis

Arthritis Care & Research Aug 12, 2021

Fairchild R, Chung M, Yang D, et al. - Researchers established a novel lung ultrasonography (US) examination technique and interpretation criteria that are highly sensitive and specific for systemic sclerosis (SSc)-interstitial lung disease (ILD) detection in the SSc cohort, affording perfect agreement between ultrasonographer and no- ultrasonographer readers.

  • Researchers assessed 20 SSc patients by lung US (278 lung zones) and high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) to investigate the performance of the lung US acquisition technique and interpretation criteria.

  • Furthermore, ILD was confirmed by HRCT in 9 patients.

  • It has been reported that lung US was positive for SSc-ILD in 11 patients (55%) with a sensitivity of 100% and specificity of 82% vs HRCT, with the perfect agreement between the 2 readers (κ = 1).

  • Via individual lung zones, the analysis found excellent agreement between readers, with 93.8% concordance and κ = 0.82.
