Detrimental effects of psychotropic medications differ by sex in aging people with HIV
Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes Aug 25, 2019
Mathur S, Roberts-Toler C, Tassiopoulos K, et al. - Researchers sought to assess the factors associated with prescription medication use for the mental health conditions and its clinical impact among persons with HIV. From the AIDS Clinical Trials Group A5322 study, they analyzed 1,035 participants (median age: 51 years; 81% men; 30% black, non-Hispanic, and 20% Hispanic). Findings suggest the association of psychotropic medications with impairment in functional outcomes of aging, with a greater risk of baseline neurocognitive impairment and incident slow gait among men. An increased risk of developing slow gait was noted for men but not for women using psychotropic medications.
