Determining the role of nasolaryngoscopy in the initial evaluation for upper airway injury in patients with facial burns

Freno D, et al. - This study was performed with the goal to assess if nasolaryngoscopy provides additional information to the history and physical in making the decision to electively intubate patients with facial burns. Findings revealed that for assessing airway injury, routine fiberoptic nasolaryngoscopy has no utility, and a thorough history and physical remains the best screening tool. Dyspnea, tachypnea and hypoxia were identified as the most important predictors of significant injury. In a subset of symptomatic patients, nasolaryngoscopy could be beneficial.
