Determination of ChloraPrep drying time before neuraxial anesthesia in elective cesarean delivery: A prospective observational study
International Journal of Obstetric Anesthesia May 17, 2019
Gunka V, et al. - In parturients (n=18) undergoing elective cesarean delivery, researchers investigated ChloraPrep (a skin antiseptic) drying time prior to initiation of neuraxial anesthesia. By blotting the skin with tissue paper and observing for residual orange tint, they prospectively evaluated the skin ‘wetness’ following standardized ChloraPrep application. Using a volatile organic compound analyzer, they also indirectly evaluated isopropyl alcohol drying time by measuring the alcohol vapor concentration above the skin. By blotting method, the estimated mean ChloraPrep drying time was 123 s. The isopropyl alcohol drying time was estimated to be 82 s. Compared to the current manufacturer-recommended guideline of three minutes, ChloraPrep drying may take a longer time. Also, the drying time could be impacted by amount of ChloraPrep used, application methods, patient features, and environmental factors.
