Determinants of vitamin D status in physically active elderly in the Netherlands
European Journal of Nutrition Dec 11, 2018
ten Haaf DSM, et al. - Considering that elderly individuals are commonly deficient in vitamin D, which can increase their risk for bone fractures, researchers examined determinants of vitamin D status in elderly individuals who have a physically active lifestyle. For this purpose, they determined the vitamin D status of 450 physically active elderly individuals who do not use vitamin D supplements and collected information on possible determinants (demographic, dietary intake and physical activity) around a prolonged 4-day walking event in July, and analyzed the information in linear regression models. Physically active elderly individuals had very high vitamin D status in the summertime, with few deficiencies, suggesting that supplements might not be required in elderly individuals with a physically active lifestyle during the summer period. Overall, vitamin D status had a significant association with lower age, lower body mass index, higher alcohol intake, and more outdoor physical activity.
