Determinants of urinary catheter removal practices in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit: A survey
American Journal of Infection Control Mar 10, 2018
Trudel K, et al. - Researchers performed a cross-sectional survey of 171 physicians and nurses working at 2 tertiary Pediatric Intensive Care Units (PICU) in Montreal, Canada to assess the determinants of urinary catheter removal in PICU patients. Factors prompting urinary catheter removal included recent extubation, superficial sedation level, fever, and history of previous urinary tract infection (UTI). Maintenance of catheters was observed in association with the presence of shock and fluid overload. Physicians were observed to perform urinary catheters removal more frequently than nurses in all scenarios.
