Determinants of neurodevelopment in early childhood – Results from the Copenhagen prospective studies on asthma in childhood (COPSAC2010) mother–child cohort

Acta Pediatrica Aug 14, 2019

Bjarnadóttir E, Stokholm J, Chawes B, et al. - In this investigation, researchers identified possible pre and postnatal factors affecting neurodevelopment of the young child. Data from the Copenhagen Prospective Studies on Asthma in Childhood 2010 (COPSAC2010) mother–child cohort were used, but excluded those with a neurological diagnosis, born < 37 weeks of gestation and birthweights < 2500 g, resulting in 650 children being analyzed. According to findings, breastfeeding, persistent wheeze, eczema, and the number of sick days were unrelated to neurodevelopmental scores. Male sex, lower maternal age, higher gestational age and paternity leave were associated with early age at milestone achievement. During pregnancy, a higher 1-year language score was correlated with female sex and maternal smoking, and a higher 2-year language score was related to female sex and firstborn. Female sex was linked to a higher cognitive score.
