Determinants of incident malnutrition in community-dwelling older adults: A MaNuEL multicohort meta-analysis
Journal of the American Geriatrics Society Dec 13, 2018
Streicher M, et al. - In this harmonized meta-analysis based on prospective data of older, community-dwelling adults, researchers identified determinants of incident malnutrition. MaNuEL (MalNutrition in the Elderly) partners included datasets: three studies from Germany and one from Ireland, the Netherlands, and New Zealand each. Study participants were 4,844 community-dwelling adults aged 65 and older. They found that incidence of malnutrition varied from 5.1% and 17.2%. Unmarried, separated or divorced participants were more likely than married participants to develop malnutrition, while for widowed participants no association was found. Findings revealed that age, marital status, limitations with walking and climbing stairs, and hospitalization were identified as determinants of incident malnutrition.
