Determinants of antipsychotic drugs prescription among community-living older adults with dementia: A population-based study using health information systems in the Lazio region, Italy
Clinical Interventions in Aging Nov 25, 2019
Bargagli AM, et al. - Researchers performed this retrospective population-based cohort study, focusing on prescription of antipsychotics (AP), the patterns and predictors of it, among older adults with dementia living in a large area of central Italy. They also determined the characteristics of patients that were associated with typical or atypical APs prescribing. They utilized data from regional health information systems. A total of 24,735 dementia patients were enrolled. The new users and non-users of APs were 1,727 (6.7%) and 23,008, respectively. More than 3 months of receipt of treatment was reported in 44% of AP users, and approximately 60% of these took APs continuously for at least 12 months. Higher odds of being prescribed with APs were observed in people using antidepressant or anti-dementia drugs. The chance of receiving APs was less in patients exposed to polypharmacy. There was no connection of cardiovascular risk factors and comorbidities, with APs use. Lower odds of atypical AP prescribing were reported in relation to low socio-economic position. A duration of AP use longer than recommended by guidelines was reported in not a negligible proportion of patients.
