European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology Sep 12, 2019
Van Stekelenburg BCA, et al. - In this retrospective cohort study involving 195 patients, researchers determined the influencing factors on tympanic membrane closure and their impact on absolute risks of closure and hearing improvement in myringoplasties. The study sample consisted of patients who had a myringoplasty between January 2015 and February 2017 at the Jeroen Bosch Hospital in The Netherlands. Data reported that the myringoplasty graft's overall success rate was 74.9%. Higher achievement rates of 85.4% and 85.5% were obtained when using cartilage and butterfly grafting compared with temporalis fascia. The data presented in this work showed a myringoplasty's success rate depends on the surgeon's skills and type of graft used and depending on these factors varies between 91.9 and 52.0%.
