Deterioration of nutritional status of patients with locally advanced cervical cancer during treatment with concomitant chemoradiotherapy
Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics Aug 08, 2019
Sánchez M, Castro-Eguiluz D, Luvián-Morales J, et al. - In locally advanced cervical cancer (LACC) patients, researchers assessed the nutritional status and changes in body composition throughout treatment. This investigation was conducted at the Mexican National Cancer Institute with 55 LACC patients. No patients were clinically malnourished at diagnosis; 33.3% presented with sarcopenia and most were overweight. By the end of treatment, 69% were clinically malnourished and 58% were sarcopenic. Investigators found that average weight loss was 7.4 kg. Energy intake adequacy decreased to 54%, and it mainly came from carbohydrates. They observed that 62.8% patients became anemic and 34.5% had low albumin levels by week 9. During therapy with concomitant chemoradiotherapy, the dietary status of patients with cervical cancer deteriorates; most importantly, muscle loss affects patients' clinical result. A higher tumor recurrence and a tendency towards diminished overall survival was seen in patients who lost ≥10% of skeletal muscle.
