Detection of occult neoplastic infiltration in the corpus callosum and prediction of overall survival in patients with glioblastoma using diffusion tensor imaging
European Journal of Radiology Jan 19, 2019
Mohan S, et al. - In this retrospective study, 48 subjects with diagnosed glioblastoma (GBM) and 17 normal subjects were assessed to estimate the overall survival in GBM candidates and to determine if diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) could quantify occult tumor infiltration in the corpus callosum (CC). They observed subjects with short survival and CC invasion had the lowest fractional anisotropy (FA) values (0.64 ± 0.05). They noted that mean survival time was significantly longer for cases with high FA (>0.70) vs those with low FA (<0.70), when demonstrated with Kaplan-Meier survival curves. They illustrated a FA cutoff value of 0.70 as the best predictor for overall survival with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.77, sensitivity 1 and specificity 0.59 when assessed with receiver operator characteristic curve (ROC). Occult tumor infiltration can be quantified by FA values from the CC can and can serve as a sensitive prognostic indicator for predicting overall survival in GBM patients.
