Detection of local recurrence in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma using voxel-based color maps of initial and final area under the curve values derived from DCE-MRI

American Journal of Neuroradiology Aug 21, 2019

Lee JY, Cheng KL, Lee JH, et al. - A total of 63 consecutive individuals with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma were recruited following definitive treatment and posttreatment surveillance MR imaging studies that exhibited focal enhancement at the primary site by the experts in order to assess the additional value of voxel-based color maps of dynamic contrast-enhanced MR imaging in comparison with conventional MR imaging alone for discovering local recurrence of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. For discovering local recurrence, with excellent interreader agreement, adding dynamic contrast-enhanced MR imaging to conventional MR imaging significantly enhanced the diagnostic exactitude. The specificities were also significantly enhanced by adding dynamic contrast-enhanced MR imaging to conventional MR imaging without renouncing the sensitivities, by all 3 readers. Hence, from dynamic contrast-enhanced MR imaging to conventional MR imaging, adding voxel-based color maps of initial and final 90-second time-signal intensity areas under the curve enhanced the diagnostic exactitude in order to discover local recurrence in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma by improving the specificity without renouncing the sensitivity.
