Detection of glaucoma and other vision-threatening ocular diseases in the population recruited at specific health checkups in Japan
Clinical Epidemiology Dec 20, 2020
Yamada M, Hiratsuka Y, Nakano T, et al. - Researchers conducted this cross-sectional study to examine the prevalence of vision-threatening ocular diseases, including glaucoma, among individuals who took part in specific health checkups in Japan. The sample consisted of 1,360 people [mean age 63.7 ± 8.7 years (range, 40– 74 years)] who underwent comprehensive ophthalmic examinations at 16 ophthalmology clinics located in three municipalities. Multivariate analysis showed that significant risk factors for open-angle glaucoma were male sex, age, systemic comorbidities, and myopia. Ophthalmic checks have been performed on many people with ocular diseases. An effective measure for the prevention of visual impairment in the older population may be the addition of simultaneous ophthalmic checkups to specific health checkups.
