Detecting atrial fibrillation in the emergency department in patients with cardiac implantable electronic devices
The Journal of Emergency Medicine Sep 12, 2019
Pugh M, Belott P, Greenwood KL, et al. - Patients with a cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED) who presented to the emergency department (ED) were evaluated for the prevalence of AF and for the stroke risk. In this noninterventional, retrospective observational study, researchers identified the undertaking of device interrogation in 494 unique patients. Among these, 54.8% (271/494) had AF detection via CIED interrogation. Observations support the promising value of using technology-assisted device interrogation of CIEDs at the point of care in recognizing patients with asymptomatic AF. Routine device interrogation of CIEDs in the ED should be considered, regardless of the reason for admission or history of AF.
