Desmoplastic small round cell tumor: Long-term complications after cytoreduction and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy

Annals of Surgical Oncology Apr 13, 2019

Stiles ZE, et al. - Researchers performed a retrospective review of patients who underwent cytoreduction, hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS/HIPEC) and adjuvant radiotherapy for desmoplastic small round cell tumor (DSRCT) from 2013 to 2017, assuming the possible utility of CRS/HIPEC, and adjuvant radiotherapy in improving local control. Nine patients (7 males, 6 Caucasian, median age 19 years (range 10–24)) underwent ten CRS/HIPEC procedures. Outcomes suggest potential cumulative toxicity in correlation to multimodal therapy for DSRCT consisting of multiagent neoadjuvant chemotherapy, CRS/HIPEC, adjuvant chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. Following resection, recurrence was encountered commonly. These cases may require prolonged parenteral nutrition, and may need additional treatment for late gastrointestinal and genitourinary complications.
