Descriptive study of the histopathological subtypes and programmed death‐ligand 1 in metaplastic breast carcinoma
The Breast Journal Sep 25, 2020
Stephen N, Jinkala SR, Toi PC, et al. - Researchers undertook this descriptive study to investigate the clinical, histomorphological, and immunohistochemical characteristics of Metaplastic Breast Carcinoma (MBC). This inquiry involved cases diagnosed as MBC at a tertiary care center in Southern India from January 2015 to December 2019. Experts analyzed 20 cases. Mixed typed MBC was identified in 75% (15/20) on excision, and the rest demonstrated epithelial type MBC. Only 20% (4/20) of the cases had metastasis to axillary lymph node. Overall, experts found that MBCs occurred in elderly postmenopausal women and were characterized by presentation with large tumor size, lesser probabilities of lymph node metastasis, and a higher likelihood of recurrence and hematogenous spread. These tumors were shown to be negative for estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor, Her‐2 neu, and had a high Ki67 index and a strong PDL‐1 expression.
